Technique of a Rib Plate Fixation

Prof. Sadat - King Fahad Teaching Hospital

King Faisal University - Al-Khobar - Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The patient was a known case of Chondrosarcoma of the rib and we had planned to remove one rib above and the one below.

On exploration we had found that the growth of the tumour was limited to one rib alone, hence the rib was excised with free margin and a 8-Hole Rib plate was fixed. There was extensive soft tissue excision along with the muscle and the skin. Without the plate there would have been a big gap. Once the plate was fixed we were able to close the wound without tension in layers.

Post-operative period was uneventful. Now after 3 months the patient has no complaints at all.
